After a few weeks of toilin’ away on this Pinto of a Web site, I feel like I’m starting to get a handle on what all this HTML/CSS voodoo is all about.
The reason I started building this site with a very stripped down, minimalist theme is because I’m a journalist who wants to tell stories effectively, and to do that on the Web, you can’t be afraid to get into the guts of your site. I knew I could find a theme with a widgetized footer, but aren’t things better [read: more satisfying albeit crappier] when you build them yourself?
Don’t misinterpret, dear reader: I didn’t build this site alone. I started with minimalism. Then I figured out how to display my own custom header [yes, some themes make that very easy; but this one was a little work] Then I moved the sidebar from the right side of the page to the left side. That was a major triumph. Then I created an alt-footer.php and taught all the pages except the home page to ignore the footer I made, because you’re probably not that interested in what I’m linking on publish2.
And today, I added a navigation bar.
Disclaimer: It’s kind of a mess right now.
In any event, I’m looking for feedback. I’m also ready and willing to contribute to the touchy-feely open source lovefest that is WordPress site design. So take my theme home with you. He’s ugly, curmudgeonly and has a heart of gold. That’s why I named him “kilgore,” after this guy:
One Response to Steal this theme.

So I guess this is a bad time to mention that the body/content well currently renders as blank in Safari. If I were to guess, there’s probably an unclosed div in the nav bar.
