Last week I spent a few hours at the Boys and Girls Club of Lodi, which sits right on the banks of the Saddle River, to hear about the damage they suffered during Hurricane Irene, and all the investments they’ve made in flood-proofing the building.

On my way out, the maintenance supervisor Diego, whom I’d met only briefly, pulled up in his pick-up. He brought out two photographs. One showed the Saddle River nipping at the small bridge just a few yards from their property. The second, taken just a short time later, showed the bridge swallowed whole.

I ended up using this photo-in-a-photo to illustrate my story. The Star-Ledger had a higher-tech way of demonstrating the before and after. Both were pretty effective, though theirs was more fun to play around with.
