“Ordinary life is pretty complex stuff”
- Harvey Pekar.
I’m a multimedia journalist, producer, and writer with a background in anthropology. I’m interested in what makes things tick. People, mostly, but the things they make, too. Institutions. Temple mounds. The electoral process. You get the idea.
I’ve done a lot of work across platforms, and I enjoy mashing them all together on the Web. I got my start in the papers, dabbled in television, picked up photography, trained in radio and wandered onto the Internet as an associate producer for MassLive.com.
I’ve won a few awards for newspaper column writing, including a scholarship from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. I’ve also had the privilege of being a fellow at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. In addition to reporting, editing and producing, I’ve taught workshops on digital storytelling and backpack journalism.
I grew up in New Jersey, and I’m not sorry about it – the Garden State has its redeeming qualities. Nowadays, I live in Northampton, Massachusetts. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in journalism and anthropology – though I like to think I majored in talking to folks.

‘About’ photo by Mike Higdon. This site was built by yours truly, including the theme, Kilgore v.1.03, a heavily modified version of the minimalism theme by genaehr.com. Kilgore v.1.03 is available for download, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
